May is, by definition, the month of rebirth and vitality in the vineyard. Nature expresses all its energy, and every row of vines requires attention, dedication, and precision. Today, we are taking you with us through the vineyard rows to share what we are doing at this time of year, balancing ancient traditions with the new challenges brought by a changing climate.
For us, choosing organic farming is not simply an agricultural practice, but a profound act of respect for the ecosystem. During this period, soil management is essential: we allow wild grasses to grow freely between the rows. Their roots create an ideal underground structure, a natural network that protects the soil from erosion during the heavy rainfalls that have unfortunately become increasingly frequent, while also providing the perfect habitat for beneficial insects. Biodiversity is what preserves the beauty and health of the soil.
At this time of year, the vines grow with extraordinary vigor, fueled by alternating rain and sunshine. Skilled human intervention therefore becomes essential to guide this development. Gianni and Dario carefully observe and respond to every need of the plants with measured, thoughtful actions. Through green pruning, we remove excess shoots, but our attention is also focused on the future and the unpredictability of the weather.
Climate change and increasingly torrid summers now require a new strategy: leaving a fuller, more generous canopy of leaves. These leaves are no longer just ornamental; they become a precious “natural umbrella,” an essential shield protecting the grape clusters from overly aggressive sunlight while preserving the grapes’ acidity and freshness.
In our organic approach, there is no room for synthetic chemicals. Vineyard protection relies exclusively on two traditional and pure elements — copper and sulfur — enriched with algae and zeolite to help strengthen the plants’ natural immune system.
